Climate Resistance

A school on Pentecost Island, Vanuatu where the impacts of humidity and tropical storms are addressed.

Duration:

03/2021 - 04/2021

Problem

Humidity effects the educational facilities by damaging books and student’s physical coursework. To prolong the life of educational materials, this project proposes the use of silica gel to dehumidify the interior space. Silica gel is a desiccant and is included in the packaging of products such as shoes, coats, and medications. In five hours, 250 grams of silica gel can absorb 75 grams of water from the air, which is enough to dehumidify a room at 75% relative humidity. Once absorption capacity is reached, silica gel can be heated in an oven at 200°F for 15 minutes and then used again. In addition, silica gel is inexpensive where bulk suppliers can provide 2,000 grams of silica gel for £20.

Climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of tropical storms throughout the world. The people of Vanuatu have made it a part of their culture to rebuild structures as cyclones ravage their communities. Re-building takes a significant amount of time and utilizes scarce resources. This design seeks to be cyclone resistant by decreasing the amount of surface area impacted by wind load during a storm. The structure will sit on lockable wheels where each scissor frame collapses into itself when being pushed away in preparation for a cyclone. Ultimately, this process retains the sentiment of re-building without reverting to the beginning.

Plan

The main classroom area will be an elevated platform that allows for strong winds to effectively maneuver around the structure. In the event of great damage, this portion can be rebuilt.
